How we make money — and why you can trust the pick

PaperPlane only works if you trust the recommendation. So here's exactly what we are, how the pick gets made, and how we keep the lights on — in plain language, no asterisks.

What we are

PaperPlane turns a plain-language need — “a file manager for Windows that isn't boring” — into a clear decision: the right tool for you, with the trade-offs spelled out. We're not a directory you scroll through hoping something sticks. We're an opinion you can argue with.

How we recommend

Every recommendation is built the same way, every time:

  • We search our catalog for tools that actually fit what you described — by meaning, not just keywords.
  • An AI advisor weighs them on fit to your need, picks one clear winner, and names the close alternatives.
  • It may only mention tools that are really in our catalog — it can't invent a product or quietly slip one in.
  • It ranks on fit. Not on price, not on popularity, and not on whether anyone paid us.

You always see the reasoning, the alternatives, and the trade-offs.

How we make money

Recommendations are free and we don't sell your data. Two things keep PaperPlane running — and neither one gets to decide your winner.

Affiliate links

Some “Visit” links are affiliate links. If you sign up or buy through one, we may earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you. The pick is decided before any of that; a payout never moves a tool up the list.

Sponsored listings

A company can pay for a promoted slot — on the home page, atop a category, or beside a recommendation. Each one is clearly marked Sponsored, sits in its own fixed slot, and is never mixed into the ranked results or comparisons.

The line we never cross

Sponsorship never influences the AI Verdict. The model that picks your winner never even sees which tools are sponsored — that information is left out of everything it reads. A sponsored tool can only win the verdict the same way any other tool does: by being the best fit for what you asked.

How you can trust us

  • Anything paid is labelled. If a listing is sponsored, it says so — with a link back to this page.
  • The verdict is editorial. We show the cons and the trade-offs, not just the upsides.
  • We pick tools nobody pays us for all the time — often as the winner.
  • Missing a great tool? Anyone can suggest one, and a real person reviews it.

We'd rather lose a commission than lose your trust.
